This is one of the best Hardcore shows I have been to in the 3 years i have lives here in TX and I hope there are more shows like this on a regular basis!

xDanverx Interview......he loves Sick of it all

My main goal on this blog is to interview people that I think are very influential in the hardcore scene in the united states but aren’t necessarily in bands but are the people that pay to get into shows, book shows, give bands a place to stay or roadie for bands on tour. Since I met danver 2 years ago he has done all of those things for bitter end and shipwreck ad and I admire him for that, so here are a few questions he answered for the world to see. Set it off!

Name? dan (danver) elswick

Age?28

Location? was denver, now its los angeles

Occupation? production assistant for reality tv

Describe yourself in 3 words? loyal, honor, pride

How long have you been into hardcore/punk rock music? and how did you discover it? i have been into hc/punk rock for 13 years now. it all started in the epitaph days. pennywise, bad religion, nofx, rancid. i started out with those bands, and then got into sick of it all. which was my first hc show. sick of it all, ensign, and good riddance. my friend ben moline, who was a skateboarder, used to sit next to me in math class, and would bring a walkman, yes i said a walkman. and we would jam out instead of paying attention to the teacher.

I know your one of the older dudes that have been going to hardcore shows in Denver Colorado for some time now, how has it changed since you first started going to shows? well, it has actually changed quite a bit. when i started going to shows, there was nothing but big ass tattooed dudes that didnt give a shit if you were in their way. the new kids, such as myself, kinda had to put up with their shit. we really had no choice. they had been there longer, and didnt cut us any slack!

What was the first hardcore show you ever went to? And where?
my first hardcore show was at the raven, in downtown denver, colorado. Sick Of It All, Ensign, and Good Riddance.

What bands do you think have had the greatest impact on your life? of course i would have to say sick of it all, for being a positive band, but not covering up all the negativity in the world. talking about it, and bringing issues up in all of their music. earth crisis, is the main reason i found straight edge. as well as strife. the hope conspiracy, because when i hear that band, it really grabs my attention!

What are your thoughts on hardcore in 2008? my thoughts are, im an old man now when it comes to the hardcore scene. i probably have thoughts that arent fair to the younger kids. i know we all have to start somewhere, but myspace shouldnt be that start. its great for bands, but i think that it attracts a lot of kids that are here today, gone tomorrow. not saying that there arent kids who love the music, and try to continue the scene. cause there are. especially in denver. i feel there are a couple of good kids who get it, and have a lot of heart!

What does straight edge mean to you in now in 2008? And how has it changed over the years? straight edge to me, if anything has gotten stronger in my life. its always been for me. i dont push it on anyone else, and i would never. people know what they are getting themselves into. its their choice to make a decision. otherwise, you get these kids who scream the loudest about straight edge, and how wrong drugs and alcohol are, and the next day they are doing lines in the parking lot, and putting needles in their arms, and celebrating 420. but straight edge has always pretty much been the same to me. its not a hard thing for me to do, because ive never really done any drugs or drank any alcohol to really miss it. i think that its really exploited right now, by the media, by kids on myspace, etc. but like i said, we all have to start somewhere. my only hope is that some kids hold on to what they say they believe in. true till death right?

Favorite band or bands? sick of it all, trial, avail, bad religion, ensign, have heart!

What bands are you jamming to right now? the new shipwreck, verse, down to nothing, against me, grave maker, hour of the wolf.

I know you have recently relocated to California how is that treating you? you know, denver will always be home for me, but im liking so cal quite a bit right now. ive met some real cool kids down in orange county that i like alot. dudes that have a lot of passion for the music. which are the people that i get along with most! been going to the chain reaction, which is a cool venue, but the sound sucks.

What is a perfect day for you? waking up to a sunny day, about 85 degrees, eating some morning star sausage, getting in my car, listening to some good punk rock and hardcore, driving to boulder, co. getting out in the great outdoors and going climbing with a good group of friends. then that night, going and eating some illegal petes, and possibly going camping just south of denver. that has made for my perfect days in the past. being outside and enjoying mother nature and amazing weather!

Best meal you have eaten on tour? oh man, no contest, i just went to monterrey, mexico, with grave maker, and we stayed at our friend luis' house. him and his brother, and sister are vegan/vegetarian, and his mom made us vegan mexican food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. nothing could ever touch that. so good. thanks again luis!
Do you have any interesting stories from the road? thats all the road is. alot of interesting stories. which is why i think i continue to do it. there is nothing normal about being in a van, with 4 or 5 other smelly dudes for a long period of time. meeting new people everyday, seeing places, venues, bands, that youve never seen before. too many stories to tell, but i cant wait to have more!

What cities do you think have the best shows right now? well, im biased, about denver, but i think our shows are alot of fun. pillow fights and smiling faces. no stupid ass fights anymore! but i liked monterrey, mexico. all the kids there are amazing. have alot of love for american hardcore! san diego and oceanside, california. good times. ive always liked seattle. lots of good bands, always coming out of there. richmond, virginia. amazing. omaha, nebraska, believe it or not, used to have incredible shows. always worth the six hour drive. but these are obviously my opinions!

If you could tour with any band who would it be? (past or present)sick of it all!

Last show you went to? How was it? last show i went to was about 2 weeks ago, at the chain reaction in anaheim, california. it was blacklisted and have heart. once have heart came on, it was pure craziness. i loved it. im old now, so i dont "dance" or stage dive anymore, but it was alot of fun watching everyone else do it!
Do you have any life goals? life goal, to always be positive and have fun, no matter what im doing. otherwise, there is no point to living!

If you could change one thing in this messed up world what would it be? a couple of things, i would change how people treat each other. if people would just take the time to respect each other, no matter what your income, race, sexual preference, job title, etc, this world would have to be a better place. there is no way it wouldnt be. plus, not a big fan of religion or greedy people. its all about respect! if youre not giving it, then youre not getting it from me!

Shout outs: Grave Maker is releasing their first lp on think fast records at the end of july, buy that shit, and support a band that has nothing but love and passion for what they are doing. a worthy band of being supported. shipwreck ad and bitter end, touring canada and the west coast together. go check those bands out, always a great show. amazing gentlemen as well! there is a band from southern california right now called a better hope foundation, in your face good hardcore!there is newer band from denver called bankrobber, check them out. good melodic hardcore! shout out to real straight edge who try and remain positive. and to my friend jordan, who has always been an amazing individual to me and all my friends. youre a good man jordan!

Mike Murphy Interview

Mike has been a good friend of mine for some time now and has been going to shows and does his best to keep the south Florida scene on its feet, I thought he would be a good first interview for my blog. In most of my interviews to come i will be interviewing people who i think are very influential in the hardcore scene all over the states but are not necessarily in bands, i want to find out what regular hardcore kids think about the world and there scene and what matters to them. So here are w few questions i had for mike.

Name? Mike Murphy

Age? 23... 24 in like 14 days

Location? South Florida

how long have you been going to hardcore shows in south FL? Fuck, I'd say since about 9th or 10th grade? Mikeim and John McHale were the ones who really got me to go to shows.

what was the first actual hardcore show you attended? Agnostic Front, Bane, Kill Your Idols. In Boynton Beach, Fl. A riot broke out and some bouncer was ripped out of his clothes, into just his boxers, where he then was standing on top of double stacked speakers. I also remember that someone had a Samurai sword and was swinging it around.

what was the last hardcore who you went to? and how was it? Blacklisted. It was alright. There is definitely a lot of younger kids coming out now, but its like a whole new breed. A lot of soft kids that are killing the vibe, but it's good to see a select few of them contributing something to the scene down here.

how long have you been straight edge and what does it mean to you? I've never drank or smoked ever in my life. But I never started saying I was straight edge until I was like 13. I remember my friend Mike Meade used to let me borrow his cd's, back when all I listened to was Machine Head and Morbid Angel. He was straight edge, so I started saying I was too, even before I knew what it was. Now I just love the fact that I can turn offers down with people peer pressuring me with out even a second thought. Straight Edge is just the way I live, I can't explain it any other way, cause this is how I've always been, it's me.

what is your current opinion of Hardcore in 2008? Like I said before, there is this whole "soft" vibe going on. People don't come out to shows because they think they are going to get beat up or that a fight is going to ruin the show. The violence is what got me going to shows in the first place. Raw, preemptive aggression of people who were going out to shows to listen to hard music as a way to relate and let out their own violent stress that has built up inside of them from dealing with the real world. Now, it's pathetic, kids would rather complain on message boards rather than come out to a show and support people who are making their way across the country to let you see them play in person and make a memory. I still love every day though, I wouldn't stop going for the world.

if you had a time machine and could go back to any time period where would you go? I would definitely love to go back to the mid/late 80's, and be like 17 or 18 years old. Seeing the bad brains or Black Flag with people of all different sorts of backgrounds coming out and just fucking exploding.

where do you see yourself in 5 years? Jail. But to be honest, I don't even know where I see myself in 10 minutes after this interview, haha.

whats does DNC mean too you? Dental Not Covered. I was skateboarding today, just chilling, eating some gummy bears when I go to lick the back of my fucking tooth and all of a sudden, a piece of my fucking tooth falls off and i pull it out. A piece of my fucking tooth. Fucked up grills for life. I love everyone involved in DNC and to me its some of my best friends that I know I can count on for anything, even if it's just a ride to a show or a ride to court 4 hours away. It's just friends.

if you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? Alaska or Boston or Colorado maybe, I dont know, just not in Coral Springs for the rest of my life.

how would you describe your mosh? Lanky, I am too fucking tall to mosh and I know I look fucking stupid. I feel like a broom stick with pool noodles attached as limbs.

last fight you got in? At Blacklisted, when I saw some kid try to walk up and sneak Goofy Noah, I actually should have let the kid do it because Noah was acting like a fucking dweeb.

If you could book a show with 5 bands to play at the factory in ft Lauderdale who would they be?(any genre) Right Brigade, Terror, Outburst, Half Off, and I would love to see Know The Score play it.

least favorite hardcore band? That fast, psuedo grindcore shit. I do not like kids rolling around like the are having fucking seizures. I don't know, I really can't think of one I hate, cause I just wouldnt even bother listening to it if it was that bad.

are you going to be attending any fests this summer? Yeah, As One Fest, Sound And Fury(hopefully), and This Is Hardcore Fest(best fest in a long fucking time)

if you could change one thing in all the world what would it be? My criminal record, snitches, me being broke, the gap in my teeth, not playing basketball in highschool, and some of the girls I have fucked in the past come to mind. But to be real, I wouldn't change a fucking thing. Everyones life is different, everyones been on different paths, and made different choices, but I wouldn't be me if I changed any of it. I take the good and the bad.

Shout outs to DNC, KTS, Matt Murphy, Jess Noel, and all my friends I have met over the years. I love hardcore.

Hot Water Music

HWM is one of those bands that i first heard of back when i was about 15 years old and they blew me away i cant explain it, chucks voice and lyrics just speak to me like no other band can its hard to explain. I recently got to see them play at SXSW music festival in Austin TX,they played for almost 2 hours and it was awesome they played every song i wanted to hear.... this is one band i would suggest to anyone!

Favorite song! Rooftops !

I've gotten the scars to remind me i've watched the clocks go around i've walked myself through some days that have put me where i am in another time in another place all things might have been in place but for now i'm finding myself up here standing on a rooftop screaming hey world are you listening are you listening to me i'm here and i'm hurting so begin again it's another time it's another place and we are making more old days but for now i'm finding myself out here and i'm hurting to begin again hey world i'm ready to listen and learn something new i'm here and i'm willing to get myself through

New tattoo

Saturday I went in to Calaveras Tattoo shop and got my 7th Tattoo by my dude Justin Martinez. Im pretty stoked on it Justin is an awesome artist and all around good dude, what I got was a huge dagger covering the whole bottom part of my left leg, Knee cap to ankle. On the dagger is my Family crest and 4 banners with each of my immediate families names MOM. DAD. NICK. CHLOE. the handle of the dagger morphs into a candle with a flame covering my entire knee cap I actually still cant believe i got tattooed on my knee cap it hurt pretty good and in a few months i have to do it again for the color but here is the pictures i took yesterday enjoy.
